Truckee Donner PUD Awarded for Resource Efficiency & Community Service

Truckee, Calif. (May 23, 2016) – The Truckee Donner Public Utility District recently won the Resource Efficiency & Community Service Award for its support of the Truckee High School Trashion Shows from the California Municipal Utilities Association (CMUA).

The award recognizes originality and creativity in energy and water resources efficiency, along with consumer benefit, among California public water and energy utilities. The Truckee Donner PUD is an original supporter of the Truckee High School Trashion Show, put on by the Truckee High School Envirolution Club and the Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships (SWEP).

“We’re honored to receive this award and this recognition,” said Steven Poncelet, Truckee Donner PUD’s public information and conservation manager. “It’s really the amazing students and our community that make this ongoing event such a success.”

Trashion Shows are held at general assemblies at Truckee’s middle and elementary schools, and at other community events in the region. In the shows, students model creatively-made costumes made from re-used trash and waste, putting on an informative and fun show that teaches attendees to learn how to live more sustainably. Energy and water conservation are key themes in the shows and the Truckee Donner PUD has collaborated with the Envirolution Club students to distribute tens of thousands of free energy and water conservation devices to local students, which equates to more than $1,000,000 savings to Truckee Donner PUD’s customers. The shows also feature the benefits of renewable energy and plug-in electric vehicles.

Truckee High School has performed Trashion Shows at schools around the Truckee-Tahoe Region, at Earth Day’s across the State, at the National Service Learning Conference in Washington DC, and at the international Bioneers Conference.  To find out more about Truckee High School’s Envirolution Club, go to ths.ttusd.org.  To find out more about Truckee Donner PUD’s conservation programs, go to www.tdpud.org.
