Truckee Donner PUD Dramatically Reduces GHG for Community

Transitioning to renewable energy sources and efficient operations is paying off!

Truckee, Calif. (October 21, 2013) – The Truckee Donner Public Utility District (TDPUD), at their recent Board meeting, released the results of a Green House Gas (GHG) study completed on the TDPUD’s operations.  The study, which compares 2008 TDPUD GHG inventories to 2012 levels, documented an over-all reduction in GHG of almost 60%!

“This community made it clear that they want reliable operations, stable rates, and reduced impact on the environment” said Michael Holley, TDPUD general manager, “The board and staff, since 2008, has been transitioning the TDPUD away from coal to renewable energy sources along with making significant improvements in our operational efficiency.”

The GHG study, conducted by Truckee-based Sierra Business Council, utilized a general reporting protocol developed by the Climate Registry.  The study inventoried 5 GHG’s and examined the TDPUD’s water department operations, electric department operations, delivered electricity, and bulk transmission losses.

Although many factors contributed to the significant reduction in the TDPUD’s GHG, increased renewable energy supplies and reduced water production were critical factors in the reduced carbon footprint.  These results are very timely as California’s climate change law (1990 levels by 2020) and Renewable Portfolio Standard (33% by 2020) are mandating reduced carbon levels and, in many cases, causing large customer rate increases.

“These unfunded state mandates can create significant uncertainty and risk for utilities” said Tony Laliotis, TDPUD board member, “It is very impressive that we have been able to position the TDPUD to meet these mandates, maintain stable rates, and do our part to protect the environment.”

A copy of the final GHG report is available on the TDPUD’s website at www.tdpud.org.  For more information on the GHG report, please contact TDPUD’s Steven Poncelet, 530-582-3951, stevenponcelet@tdpud.org.
