Truckee Donner PUD and Truckee Hometown Sears Team-Up to Save Customers $70,000 in Energy Costs

TDPUD’s program pays customers to recycle old, working refrigerators

Truckee, Calif. (April 10, 2014) – Have an old, working refrigerator or freezer in your garage that runs all the time but is rarely used? Truckee Donner Public Utility District’s (TDPUD’s) Refrigerator Recycle Program, administered by Truckee Hometown Sears, will schedule a FREE pick-up of qualifying units and pay customers $30 per unit!

The Truckee Donner PUD has been recycling refrigerators since 2008 but this program has taken off since Truckee Hometown Sears won the contract in 2012 and was able to offer the program year-round. Since then, Truckee Hometown Sears has picked up almost 300 refrigerators to date and TDPUD customers have saved nearly 500,000 Kilowatt-Hours and counting. To put this in perspective, this is a customer savings of ~$70,000 and enough electricity saved to power 5 homes for a year!

“We saw an opportunity to help grow TDPUD’s Refrigerator Recycling Program, reduce energy costs, have a positive impact on our environment, and help TDPUD improve service to their customers.” said Charlie Riley, Truckee Hometown Sears owner. “Since opening our store, we have tried to be a positive community contributor and take an active role in promoting energy efficient appliances. Partnering with the TDPUD was a logical extension our efforts.”

To qualify for the Truckee Donner PUD’s Refrigerator Recycle Program, you must be a current TDPUD electric customer and the old refrigerator or freezer must be in working condition. Free pick-ups are scheduled directly with Truckee Hometown Sears by calling 530-550-0110 and the $30 rebate is processed by TDPUD after pick-up. You do not need to be a customer of Truckee Hometown Sears to participate in this program.

“The TDPUD’s Refrigerator Recycle Program is very cost-effective and helps customers save resources.” said Steven Poncelet, Truckee Donner PUD Public Information and Conservation Manager. “Our contract with Truckee Hometown Sears has allowed more of our customers to participate in the program.”

The Truckee Donner PUD has many ways for qualifying customers to save energy, money, and live more comfortably including: Free residential energy surveys; appliance rebates that increase with refrigerator/clothes washer/dishwasher efficiency ($75-$125); and free CFL light bulbs (7-types). To learn more and participate in these programs, visit www.tdpud.org, stop by the TDPUD conservation department at 11570 Donner Pass Road, or call 530-582-3931.
