Truckee Donner PUD Modifies Irrigation Restrictions

Requests Voluntary 10% Reduction and Urges Water Conservation

Truckee, Calif. (June 2, 2016) – The Truckee Donner Public Utility District (Truckee Donner PUD), at the June 1 board meeting, took action to rescind mandatory restrictions on outdoor irrigation with potable water effective immediately.  This change was in response to new California emergency drought regulations that allow local water agencies to self-certify adequacy of water supply and to base restrictions on projected water supply shortages.  Truckee Donner PUD has not experienced a water supply shortage during the drought and no longer needs mandatory restrictions to comply with State law.

Truckee Donner PUD’s board did request that customers strive for a voluntary 10 percent reduction in water use and reminds the community that the California emergency drought regulations remain in effect through January 2017.  This includes the State’s ongoing prohibitions against wasting water that prohibit using potable water to wash driveways and that prohibit irrigation during, and 48-hours after, measureable precipitation.  Full details on the ongoing California emergency drought regulations and impacts to Truckee Donner PUD customers can be found at

“California’s changes to the emergency drought regulations no longer mandate restrictions on outdoor irrigation in order to comply,” said Michael Holley, Truckee Donner PUD general manager. “But the board wants everyone to remember the benefits of conserving water before, during, and after droughts.”

To help with enforcement of drought regulations through January 2017, the Truckee Donner PUD will continue the formal procedure to receive complaints regarding observations of noncompliant incidents. Staff will investigate complaints and take action where appropriate. Complaints must be in writing and can be filed at home page (click on drought link) or delivered to Truckee Donner PUD at 11570 Donner Pass Rd., Truckee, Calif. 96161.

The Truckee Donner PUD conservation department is available to help customers save water through their water-efficient toilet rebate/exchange, customer leak-repair rebate, free handouts of low-flow plumbing fixtures and hose-spray nozzles, as well as conservation garden concepts. There are many opportunities to save water, money and live more comfortably. Visit for full program details.
