Truckee Donner PUD Settles Lawsuit with NV Energy

Intervention in NV Energy Transmission Rate Case Saves Truckee $$$!

Truckee, Calif. (October 28, 2014) – The Truckee Donner Public Utility District filed a complaint with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regarding Energy Imbalance Rates and intervened on NV Energy’s recent Transmission Rate Case which were the result of the merger of Sierra Pacific Power Company and Nevada Power Company to become NV Energy Operating Company.  Truckee Donner PUD’s actions have resulted in a settlement agreement which will save customer approximately $400,000 per year compared to the rates requested by NV Energy.

“Truckee Donner PUD has had to fight for years to protect the interests of our customers and ensure that they are only paying for the services received.” said Stephen Hollabaugh, Truckee Donner PUD electric utility director, “This Settlement Agreement allows us to continue to procure low-cost, clean energy from the Western United States and have it delivered to Truckee at fair market rates.”

Truckee Donner PUD is a transmission dependent utility of NV Energy and relies on NV energy’s transmission system to deliver electricity to Truckee.  The rates that NV Energy can charge are regulated by the FERC and, due to the Truckee Donner PUD complaint and intervention, the amount that NV Energy will receive annually was reduced from approximately $1,200,000 to $800,000; avoiding approximately $400,000 per year in charges for Truckee Donner PUD customers.

“Stable and competitive electric rates are bricks and mortar for economic development in our community” said Michael Holley, Truckee Donner PUD general manager, “This Settlement Agreement ensures that we can continue to provide reliable, clean, and low-cost electric service to our customers.”

The Settlement Agreement will be retro-active back to January 1, 2014 and includes transmission of all of the power procured by Truckee Donner PUD including the 44% renewable energy delivered to our customers.
